Frequently Asked Questions
-
A death doula is a non-medical person who provides support for individuals and families through the dying process. Similar to a birth doula, they create a safe and healing space around this meaningful life transition.
-
Hospice care focuses on symptom management. A death doula complements their care, and tends to the human and relational aspects of dying. My role is to provide emotional, spiritual, and practical support throughout the dying process.
-
I do not provide medical care. But my experience as an emergency physician allows me to offer unique services in my doula role. I can:
translate confusing medical concepts and information.
prepare people and their families for what to expect.
act as a liaison at healthcare appointments.
advocate for someone's values and wishes with healthcare personnel.
-
You can start working with a death doula at any time. For many people, this is when they first receive a serious diagnosis or begin thinking about end-of-life wishes. Early support allows space for thoughtful planning, meaningful conversations, and emotional preparation without urgency.
That said, it’s never too early or too late. Some people begin months or years ahead of time, while others reach out in the final days. A death doula meets you exactly where you are.

You do not need to know your end-of-life wishes to start working with a death doula. In fact, this is one of the most meaningful ways I can support you. I can help you reflect on your values and what matters most to you in your life — and then help translate those reflections into clear choices about your care.
-
I will always respect and honor your spiritual and religious beliefs. I want to learn what brings you meaning, comfort, or strength — whether that is rooted in a specific faith tradition, a personal spirituality, cultural rituals, or no spiritual framework at all. It is my job to support your values and preferences.
-
This often comes down to how you feel in their presence. This is why I offer a complimentary conversation so we can get to know one another.
A death doula should help you feel safe, supported, and calm. Trust your instincts. The right doula will feel like someone who you want beside you during this difficult but meaningful time.
